What is JAdES? (JSON Advanced Electronic Signatures)

JAdES (ETSI TS 119 182-1) is the standard for advanced electronic signatures over JSON, built on JSON Web Signatures (JWS). It brings eIDAS-grade signing to REST APIs and JSON payloads, where XML-based formats would be awkward.

Why it exists

As public services and APIs moved from XML to JSON, a JSON-native AdES format was needed so signed data could stay JSON end to end. JAdES reuses the AdES concepts — signing certificate, timestamps, archival data — on top of the JWS structure developers already know.
